Back with a vengence
Despite a rather blogless week last week(thanks to a flu which rendered my brain totally useless) , I am glad to say that this week may be a little different.
First of , I am very proud of myself.
I completed two books in one week, which is a feat if you consider the number of times I have fallen asleep over a book ( which really isn't my fault because the ruddy book is so darn boring) or returned to the library after I have read ten pages.
The first was George Orwell's 1984 which is a rather paranoid look at the future. Police pluck you off the street just for thinking about opposing the government, television screens are two way devices with which the government uses to spy on what you are doing and chocolate is rationed. In what I hoped was English literature at it best, I borrowed the book and found that literature could be interesting if a tad dry. Political idea resonate in the book not unlike Animal Farm and yet makes for an interesting read even if you don't know your socialist from your communist govenment.
The second book I read and finished in a day, with time to spare. Q&A is the kind of book you read when you have satuarated yourself with one too many murder cases and too much Vatican conspiracies. Written by an indian about an Indian who wins "Who want to be a billionaire?" ,it retraces how a humble waiter finds the answers to the individuals questions from his experience in life. Also a film in the making, Q&A is a nice break from all the romance, fantasy and thriller novels and comes neatly in between Inspirational message and total Nonsense.
Today I went to the library to borrow some books again, with hopes of finding some gem, like Q&A which my friend in camp bought for a hefty 20 dollars and almost fainted when I got the book from the library.
I borrowed some book about mountain climbing which looked rather new and took it out to read during the train ride home. I knew from the start that it was a story doomed for failure when I got to the part about some guy falling off the cliff of a mountain and his lost-time friend goes to console his wife. Something tells me that it was a rather old book but looked new because no one had touched it-before me.
Maybe it was the conversation between the two ladies beside me in the MRT but I couldn't muster enough concentration to finish a sentence.I suspect that they should be working as columnists in Urban, the Straits Time guide to fashion soon enough.
Myth 1 : Eyebags cannot be removed
Ah Song: Aiyo some people got eye bags very ugly le.
Ah Fei: ya lor, but then hor some of them is natural one. Even got 23 hours of sleep also like that.
Ah Song: Wah.So jia lat ah. I think hor should put whitening cream on the eye bags then not so obvious liao lor.
Myth 2: Cotton wool is smooth
Ah Song: Ah fei ah you should not use cotton wool to put on your foundation le
Ah Fei: why not?
Ah Song: because it is not so good. Use your hands, smoother la.
Ah Fei: Orgh.
Something tells me the above mentioned are not sound advice. But then again, what do I know?
All the time they were talking, they were holding on to a pamplatte of some kind, gesticulating wildly at all the UV protection creams and toners. I thought a Pasar Malam had come to me right inside the MRT. I could only curse that it was not the Mua Chee Store since I was getting rather hungry.
