Calling Names

Not too long ago, there was a newspaper article on weird names, more than half of which I have trouble pronouncing and have more than 10 letters. This led me to think my name was too mediocre and not as special and personalised as theirs. This post is for those who feel the same way as me.

I had a rather plump friend in BMT who was by all means your average Joe, with an average name. Everyone called him Wei Ren. For some reason, he wanted to fail BMT. ( "so can re-BMT the rest of my two and and half years!) Despite his warped theory about the army, he was a friendly chap. A group of us were gathered one day and after 2 over two months of staring at his name tag, noticed something wrong. Literally.

His tag read:

W R ONG

Apparently, his surname is Ong.

From then on, I saw him in a different light.

Sometimes I wish my name tag were more interesting.

Mine read:

H W KANG

Everyone called me Homework Kang which I presume was the most interesting thing that they could think of.( unless ,of course I really reminded them of homework, which sucks.)

Fortunately, Wei Ren was not the only example I could think of because it would make this entry ridiculously short.

Also from Army is my friend Chin Da. His surname, interestingly is Wah. Everytime someone said "Wah!" in an exclamation of surprise he would respond, which got a little irritating after a little while.

One of our friends suggested he called his children Piang, Seh, Lao and Kao. And so their full names would then be Hokkien exclamations of surprise of varying degrees.

But the weirdiest name I've encountered belonged to a doll.

Just when you thought girls whose name is Kelly is rare in Singapore let me tell you, the person is a guy.

I can almost see his handwriting classes in Primary school.

The horrors!

I bet he hated English classes then.

Names are more than what people call you. In fact, it determines to a certain extend, what you will be like, much like the dwarfs in Snow white.

I took it literally when I was Primary School. Then I liked a girl named June. I liked her so much, I got her a present which conincidentally was in the same month as her name. I wrapped it up so nicely, I bet she almost expected me to propose to her that day. A few hours later I saw my gift in a dustbin. I don't what I did wrong.

Lying in a heap of rubbish was the free calender. Circled in bold red was the month June.
