What world cup?
The fact is, unlike many other guys, I don't live and breathe football, much less watch it. In fact, if you ask me now what I would rather watch American Idol or the World Cup, I would opt for the former, thank you very much.
It comes off as particularly weird when there is this girl at my workplace who totally digs the liverpool team, who ,from what I heard from all their talk, won the FA cup a few days ago.
" And you know the Gerrand goal..blah blah blah...so fantastic ?"
"erm not really.."
"ya! I was like jumping around the house..blah blah blah..blah... Liverpool won. You know I always....blah blah blah"
I tried loving football you know. Really. But at some point in the game with my friends I would either be
(a) standing in front of the goalpost
(b) standing just a little further from it.
which I think is a rather..erm.. no offense to defenders and goal keepers... boring spot to be in. But then again , maybe I don't see the beauty of it.
Come to think of it, I don't really like ball games in general. I like badminton, give me a shuttlecock anytime. I like table tennis and floorball too.
I think that this all boils down to something that happened in primary school. I was playing basketball and I was on this guy's, let's call him for lack of a better name, James's team. James was from the school team . At that time I was still fairly new to sports and I thought basketball was a cool game.
Because James was from the school team, everyone else who was on the other team decided to mark him, leaving others like myself on the sidelines. Now our team only had about five people and of these only two people were actually touching the ball, James and his friend. Being young and innocent I thought, hey this guy is getting bullied man. I mean obviously having more people who can get to the ball means it is less tiring for him.
Happily, I tried to squeeue into the ring of other opponents who surrounded him. Instead of passing it to me, or anyone else for that matter, he decided to do a one man show. This continued throughout the game. Maybe he didn't see me, I thought.
The fact was he saw me and after the game he decided that enough was enough and scolded me for blocking his way to the hoop. Frankly, between you and me, I thought it was perfectly logical that he gave me a dressing down and I had no talent in basketball.
I played football the next P.E lesson which also did not go well.
It's weird how such circumstances shape the way we think about something. But then again, maybe it didn't. Maybe, I'm just envious that people have the talent for the game and I do not.
I don't exactly watch soccer. But I do watch the World Cup. Watching players like Steven Gerrad, Hidetoshi Nakata and Inamoto!! =P
